Set the mood

So in keeping with our homeschooling theme I am going to talk about how we set the mood each day, create a relaxing and laid back area, and the difference in our school vs mainstream school. One thing I have noticed with some of my kids being in mainstream schooling that has changed so much from when I was in school is the atmosphere. Some classrooms are just what I remember from growing up, cold, hard, and strictly business. Some teachers added warmth with how wonerful they were and the love they showed us, some seemed to just be there for business. I have seen a change in many classrooms though since I was in school. There are alot of teachers who add cute little reading corners with rugs and comfortable seating. In most classrooms the desks all in rows and facing the front of the room are long gone and have been replaced by tables where 4 or more kids sit together to learn and sometimes work together. I have seen many of the teachers my kids have use diffusers and wax warmers to encourage comforting scents into their classroom instead of the stuffy, staleness that seems to automatically enter schools no matter how new or old the building is. Classrooms are just so much cuter today than they were a few decades ago. Many teachers try to bring a coziness in and give off an element of home to their rooms. I know when we used to walk into the class for meet the teacher days the first place my kids would gravitate towards was the comfy corner if there was one and the first thing I would notice was the scent of the classroom if there was one going. Even though that scent tried to cut that musty classroom smell the smell was still there but it definitely added comfort and I was more content leaving my kids in a classroom that the teacher went above and beyond to bring the comforts of home into. The thing about homeschooling is that those at home comforts are already here. When you choose homeschooling you have to decide where in your home school will happen. This truly depends on your house, do you have an extra room, extra space, where are you most comfortable teaching, how large is your curriculum, what classroom extras do you want to display, do you want to put things in a certain place each day or keep it out until your next school day. Also, you may need to look at your kids learning styles, how easily distracted they are, do you want one established area only for school in your home or are you ok with a multiuse space. So much to consider! But, no matter your home size you can make it work! We have a smallish home. Our first year homeschooling was at our old house but we worked each day in the kitchen or our little den off the kitchen. When we decided to homeschool my oldest son we had moved into our home we are in now. I set him up at the kitchen table. More and more as the school year went on we would end up on our living room sofa. That was perfect for just the two of us. When the girls joined us the following year we decided on more structure and the little kids worked at our kitchen table always and our big girls worked in their room and in my mom's room when they needed her help. She was amazing at helping me each day with the teenagers so I could focus on the little kids. The next year we would go back and forth from the kitchen to the living room and continued that up until I got pregnant with Joel. Wow, that was an interesting year! We started off in typical fashion, kitchen and living room but I ended up put on bedrest most of the pregnancy starting a few weeks after we started our second semester. Of course, we had fears on how I was going to do this. So, about a week after bedrest started both little kids curled up in my bed one afternoon to watch a movie and I realized I can do this! I certainly did, we did school right in my bed together and once the weather turned nice we would head to the front porch where I curled up on a wicker loveseat and would do our work outside in between chasing Carp who was a very busy toddler. Very interesting but probably one of our best school years! After that year all the kids started doing most of their work in their rooms to get away from the distraction of a newborn and a toddler. Three years ago after Hanni graduated out of 8th grade at the charter school she and Carp went to and since they didn't offer high school grades at the time we had to make big decisions. We decided to go back to homeschooling. Eli was still here at home doing school but Hanni decided to go to public school when I gave the kids a choice a few years prior. Since she was homeschooling we decided to go ahead and homeschool Carp that year too. Their school was 30 min away so it took alot out of our days to do the school runs and it just made the most sense to not make that drive for only 1 kid when the rest were homeschooling. We learned pretty quickly, after going overboard on supplies, school decorations, curriculum for each kid that where we were teaching wasn't going to work. Two high schoolers, one elementary schooler, and one preschooler all around our table. So many distractions! So the high schoolers went to their room, Joel and Carp would share the table while still having freedom to sit on the sofa and work. We also found ourselves in my room on some occasions. Loved that year but so unorganized. The next year we decided to clean my closet out over summer and while the rest of our home is fairly small my closet is huge but long and not very wide. We put my clothes at one end, pulled our antique sewing machine in for a desk for myself, had a desk and chair for Joel, and one of those tv dinner tables and the perfect size ottoman for Carp to sit at. I had built in shelves that worked perfectly for keeping our books and some supplies, and a hanging organizer I put between the boys desks to keep their daily supplies at easy reach. I put our white board in there and was able to decorate the walls with a nice weather and days of the week poster. I had the alphabet displayed along the top of our wall. I had my mom's old dresser in there with a tv and dvd player set up for videos and cd's to go along with some of our lessons. Book baskets on the floor for each kids were easily available. I loved this room for our schooling! We used this for almost a whole year but when Randy would work nights it got a bit sticky trying to keep the boys quiet going through my room back and forth to our "school room". It was a good organized place though for that year. We ended up back in the living room right at the end of the school year because of waking Randy too much and maybe we will go back to that room at some point but last year we just ended up in the living room doing work and that was okish. Not my favorite. This year we are still in the living area but I have a nice area set up behind our sofas by the fireplace and love this spot! I cleaned out our china cabinet and while we still have most of it used for dishes, table clothes, various other things that belong there, I have two top drawers for folders, supplies and such. I have another drawer in the table behind our sofa for some things and part of our entertainment unit the kids can store their books in when we are not in school. They curl up in front of the fireplace to do their work, how cozy that will be in winter, and I sit in my reading chair to teach them and give instruction. So we go from room to room each year. Each year we find the spot perfect for us and so far it is good. Some years we want a more formal room, like my closet that we transformed into a schoolroom and sometimes we just need comfy. Setting the mood each day has been a challenge in the past for me. Ok, I hate cleaning and straightening up. In the closet I would just shut the door and make a dash to get it ready each morning. We have had years we just leave everything out and years the kids have to put it up. I like a mix of that. Leaving it out makes for an easy, quick start each day. Putting it up is extremely nice because my house doesn't look like a tornado went through, I don't feel like we are living in a school, it helps teach the kids to put stuff away. I think the fact that we are on one side of the living area this year and I am tucked back in a corner could make it easy to just leave it all out but I am determined to put everything up each day after school. To make for an easy morning, each evening after Joel falls asleep I do a five min or so run through our whole living room and put anything left out away, pick up all his drawings and put them in a folder, if there are any clothes needing folding still I will do that and put them away, make the cushions and pillows look nice on the sofa. The big kids do dishes and either they will or Carp will wipe down counters. Eli is a gem and started setting up the coffee pot to get it ready for each morning. The kettles are filled with water for anyone who decides on oatmeal for breakfast. I love our family evening routine and it really does make our mornings so easy! We love having a cozy and comfy school day! Joel's morning chore is to put water in our diffuser and help pick the oil for the day, we will sometimes light a candle (soy or beeswax and hemp wick) or put wax in a warmer. If the kids want to lean on the hearth we will put throw pillows along the hearth. I try to keep decorated for the seasons, especially in our school area. Joel always eats first thing in the day so he will eat before touching any work, Carp is a linger a bit, eat in between things after he's woken up a bit person so he will sometimes bring his food and work and eat or just take a bit of a break. I also allow them to bring drinks to the school area and leave them on the table while they work. On cold days I will make hot cocoa, warm cider, or tea if they choose. My number one thing I have learned is if they feel comfortable they are better behaved and much more willing to listen and learn. I can't keep it too comfy though because then they get lazy. HA! I also let them wear pjs to school if they choose because many days during the cold weather I take mine off from the day before, shower, and just put fresh pjs on. They have even worn costumes and robes. The main thing I insist on is that they do wear clothes, no coming to school in just boxers and they must have a shirt on. Seriously you have to set the ground rules with boys!! Ha Ha! We do keep legos in the school area, partially because that is the best place in our living room for Joel's lego box. The other reason is because sometimes I can keep their attention longer if they have something small like legos, figit toys, playdough, stuff like that in their hands. We also have pulled them into lessons! Math with legos, fractions are best taught with them! So essentially, to set our mood right for learning time: A well organized, clean start for each day defintely helps us Joel being well fed, Carp being allowed to graze through the morning or eat while working Drinks, and in cold a nice warm drink Get our diffuser set up Sometimes other smelly comfort Pillows Being able to spral out on the floor or curl up against a pillow I love my reading chair and am very comfy in it to get ready each day Small toys for figiting as long as they don't distract A stuffed animal is allowed if it doesn't distract Remembering God is in control of our day Seasonal decorations Just being in our home with all the comforts of home Coffee for me! So there is how we set and keep our positive moods for school each day. Each family is different with different ways they school from the room they school in to what their school area looks like. We have tried just about all rooms in our home and decorated it super school like and super home like. We like home like the best but try different ways to see what works best for you and your kids!

A day in the life

My last post was supposed to cover this but I ended up really thinking about curriculum because that is truly a huge part of homeschool and I personally love curriculum and all the teaching materials each year. Our curriculm sets us up each year for success or a tough year. How our year, months, weeks, and days look also is a huge part of how successful we will be though. So, I am going to start with our year. Each year in May I think about what's worked, what hasn't. I start mentally planning for how our next year will look. Will we go through summer or will we stick to a traditional full summer break and start in August or September? We almost always go through summer and start what is officially the new school year in August. In the past we have started as late as the week after Labor Day and I really loved that old school way but the reality is we are required 180 days and some years that has been super hard to get to. Life can get hectic and when you have an extra like the fact that you are also homeschooling busy days can float by and not a single school related thing is done. Then at the end of what is planned for the school year you end up having to add days and go well into summer to make up for all the missed days. That truly stinks and now we plan ahead for a sucessful school year. I do miss the fully lazy days of summer for weeks on end and not starting school til September but (1) many of those summers were cut drastically short due to catching up from days missed and (2) several weeks of pleasure in the summer is not worth stressing out all year trying to stick to a very strict schedule and then when a day or so is taken out for appointments or illness or just even a random busy day, and those days in life with kids add up quick and create a very stressful school year. So, a couple years ago I sat back and looked at every year we had homeschooled so far and what works best for us, looked at the years that we just a mess, looked at curriculum that has worked, looked at the strictness of our schedules each year, looked at holidays, looked at learning styles, looked at what the days looked like and how to take from each thing to make a better school year all around for the kids, Randy, and myself. I looked really deeply at myself as well and the things I have done as a mom to make good years and really bad years. I had to be honest with myself and know my weaknesses. I looked at my personal struggles such as anxiety and lack of focus and added things to support myself each day. I opened up to my family and trusted people in my life and stopped being afraid to ask for support and help. I looked at each of my kids and took their struggles into account and how their days go better and made a plan to support them in a precise way in each struggle they have. Each day isn't easy peasy but our days certainly look much more peaceful and we are much happier and get so much more done in a much shorter amount of time now! I can say that each day things can change and I do have to be super flexible. What is working for one of us one day might need to be changed the next day. I have to also be really in tune to what each kid is feeling, thinking, and saying to catch anything that might need to change. Our year schedule: So, here is what our year looks like typically. I try to shoot for at least 200 days or even a little more when planning our schedule each year. The reason, life happens, appointments happen and I can't always control if we will have a morning or afternoon appointment, I can't control if I will have to take a certain kid to their appointment or if Randy can step in, he works full time so while I try to make every appointment on a day he's off and at a time convenient for him to take them but I can't sometimes. Of course, if it's an appointment for myself I have to be out of the house as well. I do try to make appointments on telehealth as much as possible so I can still do work with the kids but quickly step away when the doctor or nurse comes on and then go right back into working as soon as we are finished with that appointment. We can also do our appointments at any day or time if I can get a telehealth appointment without much disruption to our day! But, most of our appointments are in person. I also like morning appointments because by early afternoon I am drained. I have always been that way, I wake up, get as much done as I can, do school until we are done for the day, get dinner done, and then I am typically done for the day. So any appointments are best in the mornings, plus it gives the rest of the day to do whatever we want. Life also happens in kids getting sick and mommy getting sick. It happens! I know some people do school whether there is sickness or not because with homeschooling we aren't around other people so it is easy to do school and not miss days. Ok, so I know if I am sick I am miserable. I just want to rest! I don't want to do work. If I have a fever or headache I don't want to look at any words on paper or be up moving around, it will only make it worse, if I am throwing up there is no way I am doing anything. So, if I feel that way, it is only fair to know my kids feel that way, right? I have heard the argument that kids don't feel it as much as adults do. Some kids might not but it still isn't fair. At least in my family it is not. I am not going to judge any other families because we are all different and do things differently and I love that about homeschooling! So, simple things we will push through. Little snotty noses, sore throats, colds, little tummy upset, yes, we will do school. Bigger things, fever, throwing up, migraines (sadly some of my kids get migraines like I do and I REALLY hate that for my babies), even severe PMS (only me now since my youngest girl graduated in the spring), we take off for those things. I am thankful for smaller things that might take a kid out of mainstream schooling for a few days we can push through but when any kid is big sick we all take the day off. Life happens with household stuff and weather. Last fall when our roof was being done there is no way we could concentrate. We took that day off. I try to plan in advance if work is being done but it's not always possible so I keep our schedule with as many days as I can to give extra days as needed. Weather you can't plan for but if we have snow or really bad storms we can take off! Last year while the public schools had to make up snow days we did not due to having those extra days added to our year! Life happens when Randy is off work. I absolutely love Randy's schedule because he is off for a few days each week. That also means he has to work every other weekend but I am perfectly content with that. While we do try to communicate in advance that he wants to do something with the kids there are on occasion days he will wake up and if we don't have much going on he will ask if he can take the kids off on an adventure. He always is so sweet to ask in case we already have plans or an important lesson planned. I always am able to say go ahead because (1) life is precious and our babies are only with us for a short time so we need to make the most of each day (2) remember I add extra days into our year so we don't have to make that day up!! So this is all why I add extra days, we start in summer, we know that life happens and make extra days now to work around life! Our year usually starts in summer now while all the other kids are well into their break and bored because it's too hot to go outside. A few weeks into summer it seems that swimming and playing outside all day becomes less and less so we plan to start school before those dog days set in. It has many benefits for our family, (1) it gives the kids something to do for a part of their day instead of being bored for weeks on end (2) gets those days in to give more freedom throughout the year for extra vacation days and those pop up days off we can't help (3) I don't deal well with the heat and it gets way to hot to do much at all so we would rather enjoy a few weeks in summer but also enjoy time off when the weather gets cooler and more comfortable to be outdoors and enjoying nice breaks throughout the year. So it varies when we start in the summer as far as if we start in June or July (this year it was the last week of June) but we do vary and look at the year ahead and everything we have already done during the summer so far, are we still doing something daily, do we have any big plans, and are we starting to get bored. Until Labor Day we have a super relaxing schedule. I tend to let learning be child led during summer learning. We will still work with our curriculum but it's more at their pace and if they want to work on something different I am open and flexible, though I still have the ultimate yes or no on what we do each day. We usually take a break the week before Labor Day or the week of Labor Day (this year it has been this week because after 2 weeks full of appointments, most that Randy was in charge of or in the afternoons, we have been recouping. The plan was to take this break next week but instead we will be in school next week. Love the flexibility!!! We will take a fall break in October though I am not sure what week in October we will do this but I think I am shooting for end of October into beginning of November. I always shoot for this week because the kids are wound up with Halloween coming up and lots of sugar means very wild days. Also, it's nice to be able to take the day off after for the kids because they are typically up late the night before with all the excitement. It is tough to come down from all that for kids. Trying to teach on the day of Halloween and the day after is very hard! So, we have also come into the tradition of decorating for Christmas on November 1! We also use this time to plan our Thanksgiving menu and Thanksgiving unit in school. This is such a weird year though. We take a week the week of Thanksgiving and usually the end of October works wonderfully to give us 2 weeks to work on regualar curriculum and 1 week for our Thanksgving unit. This year we only have the 2 full weeks so we will work on our regular curriculum until fall break and then that 1 week between fall and Thanksgiving will be dedicated to our curriculum but also anything either of the kids needs extra help or time to work on and we will work through the weekend after the first week since so far Randy's schedule looks like he will be working. Then Monday and Tuesday of the next week we will continue on with regular curriculum and Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we will have our Thanksgiving unit and projects! This is the plan but very open for change as needed and if I feel the kids need a break earlier than end of October we will take an earlier break and just work through the end of October. Then we will have 3 weeks until Christmas break! Woohoo! We will have a Christmas unit as well during this time. We will take 2 weeks and 1 day this year for Christmas. We plan to start back on the 3rd. I am going to try to take down decorations and get our house back together on the 2nd but we will see if that happens or if we keep them til the weekend. Ha! At the end of February we will take a week off and then another week around Easter. We will then work til we complete at least 180 days but if we still have any of our curriculum left we will work until that is complete. Usually end of May we finish everything. If we finish earlier we will continue to work on things to reinforce what we have learned through the year until our 180 days. I do plan for 200+ days though so if we have those extra days off we can make sure to get to 180 easily! In our Holiday units we also work on curriculum or if it's a nice break in our curriculum I will reinforce and have them work on what we have learned. Our Months: We try to take at least a week off every other month. We try to have a new science unit each month. Some months may run over or we may even get two units in one month. It really just depends on the unit and what our month looks like. I try to do a nature unit each month centered around that month or season. I also will include other units along with nature when we have more in school weeks in a month. Our weeks: Our weeks are a little different in our family. Especially this year. I am very thankful that Randy has the schedule he does because it feels like he is home alot more but in reality he really isn't. It also gives us a chance to take breaks in the week more often, go on more field trips, allows him to handle outside appointments and errands that would either break into our days, stress me out, and might be put off to the weekend or not get done or squeezed in during a small amount of time because some places are only open during the week. The downside is that he ends up working every other weekend but honestly it is not a downside for us because we get that time during the week. Since that means he is home every other weekend we are perfectly fine with him working on the weekends he does. Our week is usually traditional for the most part. I do plan our school days for Monday-Friday typically. The good thing is that if Randy wants to take the kids somewhere during the week or there is an appointment we can make up that day on his Saturday off. I love that we can just take off a day or two during the week when he's off and have that weekend to make up the day. Randy typically sleeps later than us on his days off so we can get school done and still have so much of our day left to spend with him. He will watch tv or something in a different room if needed for us to finish up the day. We can plan our field trips during the week when places are not as busy and sometimes even cheaper to do! We also can be available for lots of homeschool days if Randy is off on days set aside by businesses or museums for homeschool days. Our weeks are much more relaxed now with his schedule! If for some reason his schedule changes to a more Monday-Friday schedule that will be fine too but we are definityly enjoying this right now! Our Days: My day starts slowly but early. I wake before everyone else and have my coffee. Sometimes Joel or Carp will straggle in and we all just chill til we are all awake good. I start chores that need to be done while I have a quiet house in the mornings. Some days I go above and beyond and make breakfast. This is not a daily or even a weekly thing for me but a couple times a month I have time and just feel like making a nice breakfast. Most days our day starts with something like eggs, a breakfast sandwich, oatmeal, or something from the freezer. We like our mornings to be easy and slow going. I let my kids sleep!! I used to be the homeschool mom who woke her kids at 6:30 or 7 and get started by 8 at the latest. Nope, nope, nope. Not anymore! If my kids need the rest, they get the rest. Now on school days I don't let them get crazy with sleeping in but on days off they have been known to sleep til 11 or 12. On school days I will stop being quiet around 9 and by 9:30 if they are still asleep I get them up but it is rare on school days to have to get them up. Between 7 and 8 in the mornings they usually start straggling into the living room. I try to get started by 8:30 if I can. Some days it is a little later and some days it is earlier. Sometimes if only one kid is up earlier I will go ahead and get started on schoolwork with that child. English, reading, and math is on different levels for the boys so I can start with those and when the other kiddo comes in they can start on their work and we can do history and science. I keep the same history and science the same for the boys but they might have different assignments more toward each grade level. We take breaks as needed. I love that if a kid is feeling overwhelmed or just needs a break they can run in our backyard or play basketball for a bit to get that energy out and refocus. Sometimes it is just one kid taking a break and sometimes it is all of us. I have full view of both front and back and our home so I love I can see the boys if they need to take 5 or 10 or even 15. On nice days we will set up our picnic blanket in the yard and work or sit on the back porch and work. We try to be done by lunchtime but sometimes there is still some independent work to be done after lunch so the boys can work on that and get it done so we have the afternoon for play, rest, a movie, whatever we choose. We live close to a nice park we can walk to so we will take advantage of walking there on cooler days and playing for a bit in the afternoons sometimes. After lunch I am done for the day usually. I have been up all morning working non stop so while my chores might be done I will help the boys with their chores in the afternoons. I try to start dinner while they work and work on chores while they work. In the evening we read. We try to read with the kids every evening. While we do most of our school in the morning I try to provide toys and other things to the boys that encourage learning all day long. I try to include them in what I am doing many days and teach through what I am doing. Learning is math, science, reading, history but so many kids have zero life skills by the time they get out of school so that is an important part of our learning here in our family as well. So this is how our typical year, months, weeks, days look. It works well for us and I am extremely excited this year with our weekly and daily schedules. I am super flexible each year and look ahead each year to see how it will look. One of the best things about homeschooling is the flexability. If you have a kid who works better in the evenings they can! If you have a job you can work around your job! If you have super early risers and want to just get the schoolday over with first thing you can! Eli and Hanni did most of the same classes when they were in school so Hanni took the books in the mornings and Eli took them in the evenings. One year they both worked mornings but just on opposite subjects and traded when they were done. My first year with Carp homeschooling he would be up at 5am ready to start his day. We wouldn't start quite that early by many days we started by 5:30 or 6! I personally love what we have going now but I am totally ok if they want to start earlier or do things a little differently. I won't be doing evening schooling with my boys right now due to I am not a night person and they need much more of me working with them than Eli did in high school. But in high school if that is what they choose then we can visit that option. I know this is long but I wanted to cover all the things for my rememberance and for anyone reading who is curious about homeschooling and trying to find their own schedule. This is ours but each family truly has to make their own and consider every family member involved to create what works for them.

How Do You Choose??

Since posting on my FB about our homeschooling adventures being in the 14th year for our family I got a couple messages asking what our days look like. Honestly, 14 years doing this and each year still looks different. I have years where we set up at our desks or table and have the strict schedule and strict curriculum and years that we are much more laid back and have more of a laid back, hands on curriculum. I have used full curricula where everything comes from one publisher, all subjects, though if there is something missing like math or any other subject they will suggest what to use and I use that and only that. I have had years I have used very mixed curriculum, different publishers for different subjects. Mixed curriculum takes much more work and research on my part but we actually love it so much more. I do love the full curriculum because I have to do zero to very little prep work as everything is usually laid out for us including the plan book on what to do each day. That is so easy for me as a mom/teacher. I'm going to talk about curriculum right now and do a day in the life of post in the near future because truly the curriculum used can be a guide for each day. How long you spend, how much extra required for each lesson, ect. Pros of full curriculum: Everything is laid out for me and very little prep work needed after I look through what we will be doing throughout the year. Lesson plans for each day so starting the day is easy. The whole year is planned for us and all I need to do is figure out where we will take breaks. I know in a full curriculum they are getting a full year of learning in with ease and I don't have to fill in gaps as much where something might be missed. Cons of full curriculum: The feeling we have to do everything that is listed to do even if it takes all day. The plans are done by week so I feel it's difficult to take a day off or a field trip day in the middle of the week if needed and feel we HAVE to make the day up over the weekend to keep up and transition to the next weeks work easily. It's hard to double up a day because typically with full curriculum the days are full of activity and work. Most days it seems like a lot of work and we are working on school way longer than I feel is necessary. Breaks can be tough. If we are in the middle of a unit I struggle to stop for Holiday breaks. I want the kids to complete what we are working on before we stop so coming back from a week or so off we can transition easily into our next units. Like most people there are certain strengths and weaknesses. Curriculum is the same, you might have a full curriculum strong in history or science but weak in literature and grammar or math. I prefer strength in all subjects so my children get everything they need for the school year. Some full curricula are great getting kids hands on in learning, some too great and I struggle with the messes made, some are pretty expensive to get all the extras for the projects, some focus on hands on with some subjects and not others, and some have hardly any hands on opportunities. I feel when they do have projects we have to do them all (though I know we can pick and choose what our family needs or likes to do). I just feel like something is left out if we don't do it all. Pros of mixed curriculum: I can pick and choose what my kids need and what will cater to each child and their learning styles. I can pick and choose for strength in each subject. I love that homeschoolers can pick for the level they are at instead of a one size. Many kids are strong in some subjects and weaker in others. I can pick different grade levels for each subject to work with the strengths and weaknesses of each child. I love that if we have to take a day off due to appointments we can easily slide back into our routine the next day where with full cirriculum we are trying to rush the school day in a short time around our appointment or just feel out of it all week trying to catch up or working the weekend. Also I feel it's easier to just work on a couple subjects with mixed curriculum if we have appts on a certain day. So much easier to plan field trips, days off, holidays, and vacations around. If you end up with something that's not working you can easily transition to another publisher in just the subject that's not working instead of changing the whole curriculum out. Cons of mixed curriculum: I have to plan for each day and nothing is done for me. Typically I feel there are less instructions so Im researching more. Some publishers give alot of work while others don't give much so you have to really look for a nice happy balance. There is no similarities in the subjects we are working on so we might be doing one thing in one subject and the opposite in all other subjects. You can do deep planning and skipping units to work each subject together but the child might miss something important from an earlier unit that will help with what you are working on in the moment and truly it is just so much work and I am taking off when my kids are taking off so I definitely don't want all my time on our days off working on this. We have done both and loved both. It really depends on where we are in life at the moment. We got a full curriculum a few years ago and loved it and expected to use that through the kids going to high school and possibly even through high school. Then life changed, the kids changed, I changed and we came to the conclusion that it was time to move on. At that point we used mostly workbooks and we did classes online while I really dug deep to find what our family needs. Was it going back to our full curriculum or something different. This year we landed on The Good and the Beautiful and are mixing in other sources of learning. So far this has been perfect for our family. For high schoolers we have always done a mix with the big kids really putting their 2 cents in on what will work for them. Last spring I knew it was time to find something different but had no clue what we wanted to do and what would work best for our little school. We turned to workbooks and online classes after hearing a friend who has used the workbooks with success. Then I spoke to a former teacher who looked into the same books and said it is about as full of a curriculum you can find. Awesome. I thought because it was going so well we would use them this year but I still felt a pull to use a mix covering my kids strengths and weaknesses. So then I found The Good and the Beautiful and guess what? Their math and literature is free online and I only have to fill in with a few manipulitives!! And my boys seem to love the set! For science and history we might even use them for some units but I can easily use some of the sets that my big kids used and also if I find something while out and about or online I can grab it up! Another thing that took me forever to realize, you can repeat units if needed! Ok, yes, if a kid doesn't get something fully you can go back over it but that is not what I am talking about! I am saying history, science, you can repeat. In fact, it is repeated throughout their whole schooling if they are in mainstream schooling and it is expected to be repeated. The main thing when repeating is to age it up. So they might learn 3 facts in 1st grade but in higher grade levels they will learn much more and at a much more mature level. I love homeschooling my kids and learning along side them. I also love that we include God in our lessons. I love the freedom to choose our field trips, when they happen, what projects we will tackle, taking breaks when we all need one, being able to eat breakfast while we work, waking leisurly and having our afternoons free, taking a full day off just for decorating for Christmas, praying together, learning about God together, growing our relationship with God and each other, and I really love having my babies here and being able to teach them. We have had years we have taken on too much life and curriculum but I am learning to say no, we are full. We prefer mixed curriculum most years but our years with full curriculum have been amazing as well! Really you have to look at your little learners and sometimes experiment to find what's best and be flexible to change if needed. If it's not working then don't just home it does eventually, school years are too short for that! So this is what our journey with curriculum looks like. I hope it continues to be easy to know what we need each year. For now though I will relax and enjoy what we are doing.

Throw back? Nostalgia?

I am obsessed with TV. There, I said it. I love TV! Especially older shows, shows that are a blast from the past, shows that bring back memories of the past. When I watch shows from the 80's and early 90's I remember curling up in my parents bed and eating a tv dinner or a totinos pizza (when they were still round) and just being a kid. I remember rushing in from outside playing, rushing through my shower, and rushing through chores just to turn on the tv in time for my shows to come on. I remember Friday night sleepovers with my Gram (before she went into the nursing home) and waiting through The Peoples Court, the news, Entertainment Tonight, Wheel of Fortune, Jepordy (seriously, couldn't she have let me watch Win, Lose or Draw and Family Fued), I waited just to catch TGIF. So the nostalgia goes past sitcoms and to game shows, talk shows, news shows. I love the old shows, all of them!! But sitcoms hold a special place in my heart. Rushing home to curl up, rushing home to shower, begging to stay up for just 30 more minutes for just one more show. Watching the only sitcoms my mother tolerated on Saturday nights (227, Amen, Golden Girls, Empty Nest). The excitement waiting for the theme song to finish to see what the week holds for my favorite characters and singing that theme song, knowing every word. Gosh I loved those days! Kids today don't have that. Some shows skip the theme song all together!! What? We can stream our favorite shows and depending on your plan skip commercials. My boys got a big kick out of watching old Christmas commercials on my phone in November and December. I mean is was a great feeling seeing those again. When reruns were on in the summer or nights my shows weren't on I got to rent a movie and usually would rent the same ones over and over but those shows are really what I loved. Even at my age now I love sitcoms over other shows usually but sadly it feels like there are not really any shows I can watch with my little ones anymore. This makes me so sad for my kids. Today kids would rather watch a youtube video or play video games than watch a program with their family. My youngest doesn't even like most movies and loses interest very quickly in movies but can watch youtube videos of people playing video games for hours. I truly don't get it but I'm sure when they are my age they will wonder why their kids don't watch youtube videos and do what kids do in 30 some years from now. Oh well. Now lets talk reunion shows and reboots! Some just aren't the same but some I actually love! Did you know Mad About You did a reboot a few years ago? I loved catching up with Paul and Jamie and the gang!! I loved it! I can't wait to share my favorites and maybe not so favorites and give my opinion. So fun! Some really bring on the memories and feels and some I just think what was that. So, here's to sitcoms, television, family time, and just catching up with our favorite characters!!

Kids hear and a touch of feelings

So, interesting thing happened yesterday. I really needed time with God so I told Alexia to play Hillsong worship music and was praying and getting dinner in the crockpot while kids were working. Well, Joel decided it was time to change pants for the third time of the morning. If you have kids you have probably been right where I was standing in my kitchen with a screaming kid surrounded by pants and chicken juice on your hands. Especially if you have a strong willed child (God seems to bless me with those)! 😂. That child was melting down fast because his demands were not being met instantly. Well, Skillet had come on my station for some reason with their song Monster just a couple minutes before. I washed my hands and tried to calm Joel down. He wasn’t having it at first like usual if he’s not getting his own way. Well, I wasn’t going to change his jeans again. Like I said it would have been the third pair in just two hours. Not necessary. When he’s not getting his own way he will stop his meltdown sometimes and try to distract us. He said, “I feel the monster, it’s in me.” I didn’t even know he was listening to the song since he was in the next room, but he heard. He used even a Christian song and repeated the lyrics to distract me and try to get me to laugh so I’d forget I was saying no and he’d get his way. It has worked in the past for him so he keeps doing it. We are onto him though. Lol. What really stuck with me though is how much God is convicting me of the things we are watching and listening to on the tv and radio all the time. Our kids hear all! They may not be in the same room but they hear. Even as they sleep they are absorbing it. This has been a conviction for several months in my heart and yesterday truly confirmed it all. Even a Christian song and he took the words and used them as a tool to distract me because he absorbed what he heard. If we hear a song on the radio a couple of times then it gets stuck in our heads. Well, if we (our children too) hear a message on tv or language or anything even once it is in their heads, more than that it’s gonna stick! So, does that mean I’m gong to only watch the 700 club or televised preachers? Or go without tv? 😱. No! Wow! Our TVs are on all the time. We love tv, but we love God more so we will choose more wisely what we watch. At first I was really about to jump on with him telling me a feeling. We are definitely working on feelings with Joel so I was kind of happy he was using a feeling but sad he felt that way. Then I realized what he was doing. It actually did make me a little happy he didn’t use something silly from Minecraft to distract but still. So, is Skillet off the table? At first I said no more. Then I thought about it, if he heard that he’s hearing more. So no. I will pray over it and pray he gets the proper message! I think God was using this moment to confirm my convictions on child’s ears in a positive way instead of him walking around saying quotes from some secular tv show or movie. Praise Him for his conviction and confirmation!

Birthday weekend

What a fun but busy weekend!!! On Friday Hanni and I ventured out to do some birthday shopping for her party on Saturday. It was kind of spur of the moment, invite some friends over type thing because we didn’t know how Eli would be doing. Well, after we told her he started having a rough time but fortunately the few days before her party had done well and felt good. On Friday night I went to book club which was so very refreshing and wonderful!! I love my book club and the ladies in it. I have not gone in several months and was thrilled to be back. I did slip out a little early to get back home to help Randy if he needed it with Eli. On Saturday we had a slow morning but then Hanni and I headed out to pick up her cake and came home to clean the guinea pig cage. We adore our sweet Nutmeg and Noel! Then friends started showing up. Randy set up the bonfire in the yard and while Hanni and her friends walked down I drove Eli. It was so great seeing him out and about!! We roasted hotdogs and s’mores. It was funny because the boys didn’t have a clue about cooking marshmallows on the bonfire. That’s ok, the girls taught them! We made it an early party due to Randy having to work Sunday morning. I am so thankful for all of her friends and love each of them! We had a ball! Sunday was a slow day. We started our Christmas crafting and watched movies and tv. We kicked off our fall break this past weekend and Sunday was the perfect day for how it needs to be. We’ve been so busy and stressed with Eli’s surgery and just life that we just need quiet and relaxed. My fall and winter goal this year is calm. This fall break is embracing that! Family time, time for self, time for just stillness but still fun.

The morning after the big day

So yesterday was Eli’s big day. We had to be at the hospital at 6 am! We went back and forth about a hundred times over what to do with the little boys. In the end, they wanted to be there to support their brother even if it was just from the waiting room. I packed up a school bag, a toy bag, blankets, and other essentials we might need. Hanni was amazing! When we had to be back with Eli she kept the kids in the waiting room without complaint and they were so great for her! Eli was just ready to get it all over with. I was surprised they got him back so fast! I remember with Gracie we waited a few hours after her scheduled time for her to get back. This is Eli before surgery! While he was in surgery we went down to the cafe to get breakfast to bring up to the waiting room. After eating Carp did schoolwork, Hanni divided to watch The Office, and I read to Joel and he played with Legos. He was in surgery about 3 hours and everything went well! The Dr did say his knee was a mess but it’s now all fixed up and we are just praying the recovery is easy! Waiting room pics! Eli was in recovery for about an hour where Randy and Hanni took turns. I stayed with him to hear all the post op instructions. Last night was not quite as easy as the hospital. Carp was wired with energy. Joel was in full meltdown tired mode by 4:30 and asleep by 5:30. At least he slept through the night! Eli didn’t make it to his bed coming in the house but literally passed out on Randy right by our bed so we got him to our bed where he stayed several hours watching tv. He finally decided to go to his bed and had enough energy to make it! Yay! Hanni immediately came home and crashed! We were exhausted! Randy went out for Eli’s prescriptions and food which we were all so grateful for! Eli leaving the hospital and the two of us waiting for food exhausted! After a good night sleep we are up and still tired! Lol. It was a long day yesterday. Today Eli starts therapy at 3 in Spartanburg. I’m looking forward to that being done and we can relax this weekend! So, how’s Eli doing? Great! He does have a nerve block and pain ball attached to his leg right now so I’m sure that’s helping! He’s in typical Eli’s happy spirits. He gets cold easily but a lot of that is the ice machine they have hooked up to him. He was very complimentary to the nurses yesterday when coming off anesthesia which is so him! He told me to tell Hannah she sucks when they were wheeling him back to surgery which she loved hearing! 🤷‍♀️🙄. I’m guessing that’s a compliment to them? He says he’s not really in any pain just itchy. He’s not a fan of the nerve block because it’s a purse with a big ball that he has to maneuver around and it’s hard to get comfortable with it constantly under his arm but I told him that’s why he has no pain so he’s dealing with it. Other than that, he’s doing great! We are thankful Randy is home until the weekend to help out as well!!

Life update, Eli, and Misfits

Ok, so I’m going to try again at this blogging thing! The truth is I really love my blog. I do! Now that we are getting back into the swing of our “new normal” I just feel it’s the right time to get back to it. I updated my about me section and boy do times change! Wow! People change! It’s amazing how life truly changes people, interests, and just life in general! My main interests are still the same though. The roots that make me who I am and who we are as a family are still strong. God, family, friends, and Christmas! Lol. The way our family looks is definitely different, kids have grown, some have moved out, others have started school, two are on there final few years before graduation. Friends have changed. God has stayed the same! He is so good!! So, what is happening recently? We are homeschooling our whole crew this year!!! Eli’s in 10th grade, Hanni’s in 9th, Carpender’s in 2nd, and Joel is in 5k! It is a big span! We are loving it! I love the family time it’s created and watching the kids learn and grow! Eli dislocated his kneecap in January at Big Air, a trampoline park, and it’s been loose ever since. On Labor Dau he dislocated it again so they will be doing surgery on Wednesday to repair his knee. It is a pretty tough surgery with a very long recovery so we are gearing up for that this weekend. He loves tea so we got him a big selection of coffees and teas and put the keurig in his room by his bed so he can make teas and coffee as he would like. He also has his little fridge and freezer in there for drinks and to keep his water bottles frozen for his ice machine. They send home an ice machine for his knee that he will need those for. Perfect set up for him!!! I’m starting to go into mom worry mode! I was at peace until a few days ago but now I’m starting to worry and panic more. I’m trying to remember to trust in God!! Have you heard of the Misfits vegetable box? Oh my! I signed up last week and we got our box on Friday! What amazing surprises! I asked about it and was encouraged by what others had to say so we tried it out. We got the large box every other week. It is basically all fruits and veggies they can’t sell in stores for various reasons. Too many, not enough, too big, too small, funny shaped. My main reason for trying this out was price. $35 for a large box. Second, I want my family to eat more vegetables and I want us to try things we wouldn’t normally try. We got fennel, radishes, and spaghetti squash. Now, Randy wants to do keto and if I am doing whole 30 I will get spaghetti squash. I have bought fennel before but nobody liked it so I probably would not buy it again for the family. We actually grow fennel but I never dig it up because my family just does not like it. So now I am researching ways to prepare it that my family will like it. I can’t stand radishes but again, I am researching ways to prepare them that we will like them. Evidently you can roast them and it takes the spiciness out. I’m excited to try that. I hated brussels sprouts for a long time until I learned how to prepare them properly. I am so excited about this box because it is not only going to help our family to try new things but help me to be able to prepare these things so maybe my family will learn to like new vegetables!! They are all organic too!! This is a pic of our table covered in goodness! Joel, who loves vegetables and fruit, was thinking it was his birthday! We got spaghetti squash, green peppers, radishes, cucumbers, Brussel sprouts, pears, apples, lemons, yellow squash, grape tomatoes, onions, lettuce, oranges, fennel, yup, we are going to be eating good! http://misfitsmarket.refr.cc/katehorton Here’s a link if you want to try your own box!!

Never late but never on time

I will never be the mom who has her cute little monogrammed picnic folding chair out at the front of the car line eating her lunch reading a book or chatting with the other early birds moms and grandmoms. I truly love the early bird club they have going on there even if it is nuts and they seem to have no life what so ever. It is their life. It is what these ladies do. They are the first in line. They visit, they chat, they catch up on reading, they eat, and they just enjoy the quiet moments while a younger sibling may be sleeping or quietly entertaining themselves in the backseat. As moms we all try to read, chat with friends, visit with other adults, enjoy quiet moments. We just don't all do it in the front of a car line. I certainly will never be organized enough to get to the front of the car line to have "me" time since Hanni has been in public school for only a week in a half now and I think I have been almost the last parent picking up twice now!! Fortunately, she gets me. Kudos to those front liners though and enjoy your "me" time! I'll just squeeze it in during my escape to the grocery store or visiting my neighbor a couple evenings a week. Whatever you do moms, get some "me" time for you and your kids!!

Time marches on

Several pages in our family book have turned in this past year. We have welcomed sweet Joel to the world. My mom has passed on. Maryjo is no longer living with us. I am going back to work. Hanni started back to public school. Things are changing fast. Amazingly they are changing for the good finally though!! Praise God for his constant hand over our lives even when things look rough!!

Bedrest Week 1

We had not made a big announcement, although I had told many friends, that I am pregnant. Well, last Thursday morning changed everything! I went into Maternal Fetal Medicine to have a regular ultrasound and get started on progesterone shots. Our baby has some markers that maybe something could be not right but I am believing that all is well and will be fine. The ultrasound tech looked at my cervix and said, "it's fully open". I knew we had options from when we lost Gilbert. I talked to the doctor and we adecided on an emergency cerclage. That is a stitch to basically sew the cervix up. I had my appt just in time!! Now I am on Very Strict Bedrest!! It has not been easy but I am almost a week in and doing good I hope! I have an appt tomorrow afternoon to check on things. I went in on Monday because I had so many questions and the nurse said to go to L&D. Everything looked good then so I am praying it still will. I have been so blessed with friends who have stopped by and set up a meal plan for us and just taken the time to text and call to check on me! It has been a blessing. I can do five months of this!! I really can!! It is so worth it!!

Thanksgiving last year vs. what Thanksgiving this year will be

I'm just going to say it, last year Thanksgiving was rough!! I mean very rough!! It was the worst Thanksgiving I can ever remember and we have had some bad ones. Through all of our bad Thanksgivings though they have all turned out great. Last year was no exception! To begin last year was our first year without daddy. That was the core of all the issues surrounding our bad Thanksgiving. Nobody really was feeling it, except the kids. They were totally giddy waiting on their turkey dinner and the official kick off to the Christmas season. You could tell there was even a fog over them though. I don't know if they were feeling the depression us adults were holding or if they truly sensed it was just a hard time to be celebrating. Let me explain more. We lost daddy in July but Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday. He always made the turkey, stuffing and gravy. Those were his babies. From a young age I remember breaking dried bread with him, and a little older mixing the stuffing. Then I remember helping to stuff the bird and getting it ready for it's time in the oven. I remember my daddy and I playing in the kitchen while mom just wanted to bird in the oven. I remember daddy wanting to eat in front of the television because he had to watch the game while mom wanted a nice family dinner. I remember mom going to great lengths (sometimes just for the three of us) to set the table, have dinner at a decent time, and enjoy each others company just this one day each year. Daddy, he just wanted to eat turkey and watch a game! I have to side with mom on this one though!! Mom and I never really took the time to mourn daddy's death properly together during the months of July to November of last year so by Thanksgiving we were both done! We had finally just had enough. Neither of us were feeling it at this point and I was covering my feelings by going all out (as always) and mom was just wanting to sit in her room and not participate at all. I was upset and she was upset that I was doing so much on "daddy's holiday". I finally took the 20 pound frozen turkey and just threw it over the back fence! I didn't want to celebrate at all! I was just done!! Well, that is when the family swoops in and saves Thanksgiving! I ended up leaving and crying. I needed space (yes, I was ok to drive). My family saved the turkey, knowing I wasn't really done but just needed to mourn. My mom was crying with the family surrounding her letting her mourn my daddy properly, finally. I came back within about five minutes (I can never stay away, I love my family that much). I ran straight to my mom where we embraced and just cried. We cried over my daddy, we cried over turkey and we cried over the fact that we will never eat Thanksgiving dinner by 4 o'clock because we are just not that family! But mostly we cried over my daddy. We cried and talked for a long time and had our mourning period finally. I think she had been ready to mourn for a while but I had personally been on auto pilot since my daddy had passed away. I never gave my mom that. In the end we were able to have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner, thanks to my wonderful husband and kids. I made the turkey just like my daddy would have!! He would have been proud of our family last year!! We ALL came together and made the best of a really bad situation!! I am proud of our family! I am not proud of my actions but I know I didn't let God help me up until that point get through my daddy's passing. I learned alot from that situation. I kept praying for my mom and for God to help her but never once did I turn to Him myself. I still don't know why I didn't. I think I just let my flesh get in the way and thought I had it all under control. I didn't at all! Now, ANYtime I encounter something I really try to let God take over and fight that flesh that is always getting in the way. I have definitely changed alot in the past year in my walk with The Lord and I will continue to pray His help in my life on my daily struggles! As far as this Thanksgiving, we will be celebrating on Friday with Randy's brother and his friend!! I am so excited! We may even have another couple over which I am thrilled about! I absolutely love this lady and she lives so close but we never see each other. I really hope they can make it! I am totally stoked about Randy's brother coming for a couple days though because it has been too long since we have seen him. He is in Atlanta now so hopefully we will see him more. He hasn't seen Gracie since she was 7!! Wow!! We are in the process of getting our Christmas decorations up (well, Maryjo is) and I am getting the menu ready! I can't wait! No more throwing turkeys! I don't think Maryjo will ever let me live that one down!!

What an amazing weekend!!

Life has been busy! What's new?! Hanni turned 9 earlier this month!! I can't believe my baby girl is 9 years old!!! We just had a small family celebration with presents and cake before Randy had to work that night. It was so bittersweet since next year my baby will be double digits!! Randy had a surprise weekend off! His schedule got changed this week and he told me Tuesday he'd be off for the weekend which worked out perfectly since we had tickets to Passion:LTFB Tour stopping at our church Saturday evening!!! What an amazing evening with the family and being able to worship God! Kristian Stanfill was awesome and to see so many young people come together to worship was just so awesome!! We also got to sit with some pretty great friends of the girls!! I just love my girls friends as much as they do!! I am so thankful that God has placed each and everyone of the people in my kids lives that He has! It is so neat to see the relationships grow and even look back and remember having those same people in my lives just different faces and how blessed I also was as a kid! Randy, Carpender and I Randy, Eli, Carpender and I Sweet Jessica and Hanni bug You wouldn't know it by the picture but Hanni was miserable at the concert! She was sick but we didn't know it until after. She was just not herself the whole night so I took her temp when I got home and it was a low fever. Poor baby!! She bounced back quickly by the next afternoon but I felt horrible for her!! This is Gracie and me after the concert. It was late and we were tired. We were driving all over town looking for Maryjo because we were going to pick her up! Umm, can we say it was loud in there and miscommunications all over the board!! Oh and I should have pick up my phone and called her after the concert!! Oh well, Gracie and I had fun and Maryjo got home, finally!! Ha!! The next morning we had to be at the church bright and EARLY!! It was rough!! Gracie had a performance for Elevate Student Choir!! I have to say these kids are awesome!!! Sunday afternoon we carved pumpkins! How fun!! Our oven went out Saturday and I usually make snacks while the family carves each year. This year I had to make fried dough instead of pretzel balls! So good though!! So unhealthy but So Good!! Fortunately, our oven was fixed yesterday, thanks to my amazing husband!!! So yes, it has been busy but fun!! I am loving the fall weather but now I am wondering where it went!! We got hit with cooler weather last week and now it is warm again!! Come on cold weather!!

Worst Blogger Ever!!

I think I am the worst person in the world to have a blog! I did very well at keeping it up for a while but then didn't post for a year and a half!! I have been very busy though. We did have a baby boy!! Carpender McTighe Horton.
Ok, that was 17 months ago! Here's is our little monkey now!
He is an absolutely amazing kiddo! I love this boy! I know I sound just like a mom but I mean it! He is so awesome!! And Fuuunnnn!! We have been through a lot in the past year in a half though. As much fun as we have had with adding Carpender to our lives it has been a hard time too as we have had to say goodbye to my daddy.
This is one of the last pictures we have of daddy and it is of him and Carpender! He loved "the baby". My daddy was an amazing man and it has been so hard with him gone but I know he is in a better place and am so comforted by that! We also said hello and goodbye to Gilbert Gabriel Horton this year. On June 18 Randy and I had a baby boy at 21 weeks. We were prepared for our loss and knew what to expect when we gave birth to our baby boy. Our baby had a severe heart defect and we knew with the particular heart defect that our baby had it was for the best. My body was in the early signs of labor at our 20 week ultrasound and things were progressing. It actually was five days later that I had Gilbert. It was a sad time but also a special time. As far as everything else, we are very busy with activities each day it seems! I love days I can just relax but they are few and far between!! The kids are growing like weeds! I am bound and determined to keep up better with my blog!!

Bread making with the big girls!

Both my big girls have shown interest in making homemade bread and things from a rising dough (pretzels, bagels, cinnamon rolls). I told them to both make a basic white bread first and then move on from that. I asked if they would like to try a new bread each week and they both seemed to like the idea. We will start next week with a basic white bread and then move on to other things. Since bread making tends to take a little while they will work on different days. Gracie is extremely enthusiastic about the whole thing. This week we will be making a sourdough starter and even an Amish friendship bread starter (which Gracie wants to start). Watch out friends and neighbors because if we can keep it alive you will probably be getting some. I have always enjoyed making bread and I think both girls will like it also! It is always nice to come home to fresh bread baking! I used to bake bread every other day and Randy loved coming home to the smell! Now I don't make it as much but still love the process and can't wait for my girls to have that same experience!!

Our anniversary!

Randy and I have been married for nine years! Some days it doesn't seem that long (time flies when your having fun). Other days it feels like we have been together for 50 years (we are still having fun though :)! Our anniversary isn't a day we usually make a big deal out of. Every day is a day to show our love to one another and we don't really need a calendar to remind us of that. Most years we do go out to eat, which is a treat from my parents. This year was a little different though. I loved what my family did! They got us a pressure canner and a few books on canning. Randy and I have fallen in love with preserving seasonal foods so that was the perfect thing for us! Especially this time of year! My plans for our anniversary were to stay in, have our usual Friday night pizza night, and look through our new books. Ha! At 4:30 Randy called me and asked if he had some nice slacks and a nice shirt clean for his ceremony that night. How could I have forgotten when we were just talking about it the day before and I convinced him to go AND that I would be there for it!? He was inducted into the National Honor Society Friday night! I rushed to get ready because we were supposed to be there by 6. He got home about 5:45 and also rushed to get out the door. Fortunately it didn't start till 7 but we were a little late. It was a nice ceremony and fairly short but I had only had the kiddos order a couple pizzas and was afraid they would be gone by the time we got home so we went out to eat anyway. We went to Bojangles! Yes, fast food for our anniversary, we know how to party! We then came straight home and got ready for bed. Yup, really party animals! Bed by 9:30! It was a perfect day though and we both enjoyed ourselves and each others company very much. I am so proud of my husband and all his accomplishments!!

32 1/2 weeks

How far along?
32 1/2 weeks

Weight gain?
Ha!

Maternity clothes?
Yes!

Stretch marks?
No new ones, just the ones from the other kiddos which I notice more now.

Sleep?
Some nights I sleep great and others not at all. Always get up during the night a few times to potty and napping is getting harder since I can't get comfortable.

Best moment this week?
Finding out even though the baby boy is little and still has a little tummy it is growing and things look great! Praise God!!!! We have been watching cord flow and weight for a few weeks now but all looks good!

Food cravings?
Really the only craving is those ice cream drum sticks. I am craving Chick-fil-a a little but as long as I have food I am happy! I always seem to be eating something or looking for something to eat!!

Gender?
Boy

Belly Button?
It is almost flat now! Randy says when I pops out I am done cooking! lol

Movement?
He has his moments of scaring me because I don't feel him for a while and then he just has a ball in there! He is moving more but not kicking as much. I think space is starting to get a little tight in there.

What I miss?
Energy, sleep, being able to do as much without wearing down and needing to take a rest! Being comfortable all the time! Not having indigestion from just looking at food!

What I'm looking forward to?
I think the whole family is looking forward to holding this little boy! Hanni has even cried over wanting him now! I told her to wait just a few more weeks!

It is a pretty bad pic but it is me at 32 weeks! At least I have a pic to remember what I looked like! lol

Spring Break

Our spring break has been great!! The big girls got to go to the beach with our neighbor from Sun.-Wed. and they had a blast! While the big kiddos were gone the littles and I decided we were going to have some fun too and have somewhat of a staycation. We did do some work, but we had fun too.

These pictures were after our hard morning of work Monday morning. We took a huge pile of branches and some logs out of the front yard. Randy cut down a few trees there and we put fruit trees instead but to put the fruit trees in we had to clear out the cut trees. The kids and I had a lot of fun doing the work though.

Hanni has played a lot of dress up this past week! She even included her's and Gracie's stuffed animals!
On Monday afternoon, after we finished our tree removal, we went to Chick-fil-a and got food to bring home. We really worked up and appetite and I was too tired to eat in so we brought food home to mom and daddy. We got banana pudding milkshakes as a treat and what a great treat it was. Then the kids and I curled up for a rest time. Hanni ended up going to her room for more dress up while Eli watched a movie and I slept a little.
Monday afternoon we went to Lowes, the flower place, and to get some strawberries. The kiddos helped me pick out some flowers for the yard and a couple pots on the porch and at Lowes we got soil and a blue light bulb for the front porch so we could light the house blue for Autism Awareness. We all really had a great time!
Monday night Randy got into the house work, planted one of our trees and taught Eli how to take bark off logs. On Tues. he mentioned that he wants to learn to whittle wood so I guess I have to do research. I know it is a soothing activity so it may be right up his alley!

On Tuesday and Wednesday we had laid back days. My dear friend Amber came over on Tuesday and it was so good to catch up. She has been planning her wedding so we haven't seen each other as much. I am looking forward to summer when we can see alot of each other!
It was just so nice to have some down time in the beginning of the week.
Wed. night the girls came home and boy were they excited and had so many stories to share.
Thursday I had two doctors appts. They both went well and they are watching the baby for cord flow which has a little resistance but hasn't changed so that is actually good. If it changes and gets more resistance they have to watch even closer but so far so good!!! Praying it keeps going good! The baby gets another weight check next week. I can't believe I have less than ten weeks left!
Yesterday, Gracie and I went out for some secret missions.

It was so nice to get out with just Gracie and we had so much fun! We got Easter stuff and today she is going to assist in egg decorating! So proud of the young lady she is becoming!!!
We came home to a big play day for all the kiddos (and came home to this little diva).

Our neighbor dressed her up like a rock star! We have had such a great week and I am looking forward to the weekend! Egg dying, egg hunts, the bunny comes and lots of garden work!! What a fun spring!!!

Feeling the itch...

I have been feeling the itch to start canning for the year! I fell in love last year with the process. By the end of summer though, I was done! I knew that it was something I enjoyed though and want to continue to do each year. I am so excited for strawberries to come out. I have so many things I want to try with them including just plain freezing some. I ordered some vanilla beans online and am looking forward to using that in some of my recipes. Wow, vanilla is expensive! Thank the Lord someone gave me a tip to try ebay. I remember who said it but I either heard or read it last summer and fortunately I remembered.

This week I made limoncello. I have been wanting to make it for about two years now and my neighbor loves it. I figured since I am still waiting on strawberries to come in I might as well go ahead and make some. Also as soon as my vanilla gets here I will be making our own vanilla extract. Unfortunately it takes a long time to get ready to use but I will try to be patient. My mom bought some from Mexico years ago and that was the best vanilla I have ever used so I am pretty excited to make it at home.

We have stayed busy here. Randy has cut down some trees in the yard. He is still working on cleaning up that mess but we are going to put some fruit trees in the place of the ones cut. One or two of them were just taking over the yard so nothing else was growing properly so as sad as I am to see the shade go I am looking forward to fresh fruit from the trees and seeing our other trees thrive.

There is still so much needed to be done before my plants arrive and the baby arrives but I am trying to stay calm and if it is done it is done and if not, well, we tried. I just get frustrated because I can't help more but the family is very understanding and I am blessed to have such great people in my life!

Some may be wondering why my child and her friend are wearing trash bags. On Friday my neighbor and I were hanging out and doing a little weeding in the garden and the girls were digging for worms. Eli was hiding inside our neighbor's house because he saw a few bees. While the girls were digging for worms, Corbin, asked for a Hefty bag so she could sit down and not get dirty. I know digging for worms but doesn't want to get dirty, how a little girl thinks! She went and got one and soon after coming back outside it started raining. We all went in but I went home for a couple minutes. When I returned all three kids were playing with this bag. Don't worry they kept it away from their face and had supervision. Then they started making scarfs and such with the torn pieces. Corbin asked her mom for her own box of bags. She got them and by Saturday they were making trash bag clothes. I don't have a pic. of Eli but his outfit was pretty impressive. Who knew garbage bags could be so much fun!!?? I love how kids find ways to entertain themselves!!!
